Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Center is proud to now offer patients laser treatment. It’s a breakthrough treatment option for our patients suffering from the stubborn and frustrating toenail fungus known as onychomycosis.
Understanding and Treating
Onychomycosis (Toe Nail Fungus)
The fungus causing onychomycosis can be picked up anywhere you travel with bare feet and thrives in moist environments. It can easily spread from toe to toe leading to ugly discoloration and the thickening and cracking of the nail. Unlike older treatment options, such as topical solutions which require long treatment regimens and have low success rates, and oral medications that require blood tests,
laser therapy is a new, safe treatment with several benefits.
Advancing care with Laser Therapy
Now, OFAC can offer you a very effective, quick, non-invasive and side effect-free treatment option. Using a high-intensity beam of light to neutralize fungus deep inside or below the nail, our team can perform the procedure right in our office.
Experiencing the Laser Treatment Procedure
To thoroughly eradicate the toenail fungus, the nails and surrounding areas are exposed to the laser beam. The toenail area will feel warm during the procedure as it is repeatedly exposed to the laser, targeting the fungus deep inside the nail and nail bed. Treatment sessions typically last around 20 minutes and are repeated as necessary based on the patient’s individual needs.
Patients who’ve received laser treatment describe feeling a hot pinch followed by a warm sensation that dissipates within seconds after the laser is removed from the nail. There
have been no reports of side effects or long-term pain associated with laser therapy for
toenail fungus.
A patient can receive treatment and return to their daily life without any special recovery considerations. You can even receive a pedicure afterwards, though you will need to arrive at your next session with unpolished and unadorned nails.
Seeing Relief and
a Speedy Recovery
Treatment varies from patient to patient, but in as few as three 20-minute sessions, six to eight weeks apart, nails can be cleared of fungus. With proper aftercare directed by your physician, such as use of a UV shoe sterilizer, laser treatment has been shown to be 87% effective.
